| In the first census after the Civil War and the disease epidemics of the 1860s, we see some families in Bath county reduced by war and sickness, but even more families have been rebuilt - widows remarried and new children born. New immigrants have arrived from other Virginia counties & from Ireland to work on the railroad, and, for the first time, we see a listing of the ex-slave population of the county.
Information given in the 1870 census includes: dwelling & family number, name, gender, age, race, occupation, birthplace, value of real estate & personal property owned, and comments about disabilities, school attendance, married within the year, twins, etc. The Bath census taker even listed everyone's county of birth, which was not a requirement but is extremely helpful to us today. |
